Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) in Brief

Universiti Malaysia Perlis is the 17th public university set up by the government of Malaysia under the Ministry of Higher Education. It began operation in February 2002 as an engineering-focused university. Its original name was Kolej Universiti Kejuruteraan Utara Malaysia (KUKUM) or the Northern University College of Engineering Malaysia. On 1st February 2007, the University changed its name to Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP).

The number of its first students' intake was 119, with only 13 academic staff at that time. The number today has increased tremendously to nearly 10,000 students and 622 Lecturers as well as 180 Instructors and Teaching Engineers. Sixty three of the academicians are international scholars from 18 countries.

When it first introduced its postgraduate education programmes, only two and 18 students enrolled in the University’s PhD and Master Degree programmes, respectively. The statistic has now changed, with 224 PhD and 306 Master students. Thirty one of them are from 17 abroad.

UniMAP boasts one of the most sophisticated libraries in Malaysia. It is the repository of 44,962 hardcopy books, 1.31 million electronic books, 14,126 electronic journals, and 46 printed journals. Being a young university, to be able to publish six international journals is something to be proud of. One of the journals has been indexed in Scopus and the same journal will be recognised by ISI next year. The journals are published through UniMAP Press, alongside 30 to 40 academic books a year. Although young in age, the University’s active participation in research and publication at the local and international circuits has managed to place itself as the top technical university in Malaysia, and among the top ten universities, as rated by the Ministry of Higher Education.

UniMAP has won numerous high-raking awards in various exhibitions at the international and local levels. Among the prestigious ones are the International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition - ITEX (out of 20 universities that participated, UniMAP won 11 Gold, 24 Silver and 11 Bronze, and it was also named as the Champion by the Malaysian Invention and Design Society). Other exhibitions participated by UniMAP include the Seoul International Invention Fair, Innova Exhibition in Croatia, and the International Engineering Invention and Innovation Exhibition (I-ENVEX).

Since 2005, UniMAP has developed extensive networking with various academic institutions and scientific organisations worldwide. It is its policy to open up to new knowledge and innovation from different scientific explorations and schools of thought.
