Nanotechnology

1. Objectives

The objectives of the workshops (and the resulting ‘Work Clusters’) are in line with the general objectives of the AUPF, namely:

  • To provide a platform whereby Asian institutions of higher learning can communicate with each other in order to share information, exchange experience, forge research ties, and realise common development goals in the areas of Sustainability and Nanotechnology.
  • To increase the involvement and participation of members of the Asian tertiary academic in the areas of Sustainability and Nanotechnology.
  • To strengthen the bond among the academic institutions of the countries involved as well as to network with each other, particularly in the fields of Sustainability and Nanotechnology.

2.   Details of Proposed Workshops

2.1   Dates:  6th October 2013

2.2   Membership: UniMAP, and all other universities that have agreed to join by filling up the form.

2.3   Agenda of Workshop

  • Introduction
  • The academic and research status of the field (Sustainability/Nanotechnology) in each members’ university
  • Development of proposed ‘Work Cluster’ common goals
  • Action items and responsibility distribution of the proposed ‘Work Clusters’
  • Terms of reference of the proposed ‘Work Clusters’

2.4   Expected Deliverables (to be presented on 8th October, 2013)

  • Proposed ‘Work Cluster’ common goals
  • Action items and responsibility distribution of the proposed ‘Work Clusters’
  • Terms of reference of the proposed ‘Work Clusters’

3.     Abstract on Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology is science, engineering, and technology conducted at the nanoscale, which is about 1 to 100 nanometers. Many scientists are interested because the nanomaterials show significant different in term of properties of as compared with materials at larger scale. Today's scientists and engineers are finding a wide variety of ways to deliberately make materials at the nanoscale to take advantage of their enhanced properties such as higher strength, lighter weight, increased control of light spectrum, and greater chemical reactivity than their larger-scale counterparts. Thus, nanotechnology not only creates advancement for technical and scientific from existing technologies, rather forms new technology and appliesextreme impact on the economy and society in the coming decades. Malaysia started to involve in nanotechnology began in early 2000 with the formation of several research groups. However, the National Nanotechnology Initiatives of Malaysia (NNIM) was officially launched in 2006 by the Deputy Prime Minister. There is growing number of research groups actively involved in nanotechnology in Malaysia, majority of which are from the higher learning and government research institutes. One of them is the Institute of Nanoelectronic Engineering which was established in 2008 at Universiti Malaysia Perlis focusing on nanomaterials, nanoelectronic and nanobiotechnology. This workshop hopefully can gather researchers from across disciplines to search a better way to establish a network linkage between Asian universities to respond new challenge effectively for the benefit to all researchers who join this workshop.
